Mr. Jacob Douvier

Upper School History, Composition, Literature, and Rhetoric

Mr. Jacob Douvier has taught at Providence since 2008 as an upper school humanities teacher. While Latin, composition, and rhetoric are frequently part of his teaching load, the core of his teaching duties is Ancient and Medieval literature, philosophy, and history. Mr. Douvier firmly believes that virtue, not utility, is the hallmark of a classical education and therefore seeks to help students understand that happiness is not about fame, power, money, or pleasure, but is about the union of knowing and doing in accordance with the truth that God has made known through Special and General Revelation. While he loves all of the Great Books he teaches, he has been most deeply impacted by Boethius’ The Consolation of Philosophy, Plato’s Republic, Homer’s Odyssey, and Plutarch’s Parallel Lives. Mr. Douvier and his wife Rachel have six children and enjoy extending the hospitality of their home with friends and family.

“I love teaching at Providence because we value learning for its own sake. The Lord has manifested his goodness, truth, and beauty in Creation and it is a privilege to lead students through the Great Books to a place of delight and wonder.”
