Table Talk – Encouraging Discussion Beyond the Classroom

Ever wonder what our students are learning or what types of subject matter they are pondering during classroom discussions? At Providence, we encourage everyday encounters with great books, history, theology, classical languages, logic, mathematics, arts, and sciences. Through these encounters, our students are learning to engage in deep, meaningful conversations about everything from the fall of the Roman Empire and what human flaws may have caused such destruction, to the relationship between a light year and a parsec and the vast universe each measures. These discussions begin at a basic level in kindergarten and continue on through 12th grade, becoming more advanced and intricate as each year passes. We decided we wanted our parents to have a way to engage with our students about what they’re learning, so Providence faculty and staff regularly offer up questions that come from classroom discussions. These questions are then collected and added to a document known as our “Table Talk.” Table Talks are issued as a way to cultivate table/dinner conversations about our curriculum. Please explore the Table Talk archives to see what students are learning here at Providence.
